Travel FAQs

 What is Travel soccer?
Travel soccer is competitive soccer played against teams from other communities which are part of the Westchester Youth Soccer League or WYSL. These teams usually are made up of the best players in the respective communities.

What is WYSL?
Mamaroneck is a club, when clubs want to compete against other club they joint a league. WYSL has over 30 clubs competing, around 450 girls' teams and 480 boy's teams.

How big is MJSL?
Mamaroneck has 15 Travel teams ranging from U-9 to High School Division.

How long is the season?
Travel soccer consists of spring and fall play, as well as 2 or 3 weekend tournament per year. There is also winter indoor play, usually a team decision, and practice once or twice per week.

How serious is Travel Soccer?
Travel soccer is a giant step up from recreation soccer. Remember that this is the program that prepares the child to play High School Varsity soccer.

Should I insist my child to play Travel Soccer?
NO. Travel soccer is best suited for aggressive minded children who thrive on competition. We encourage parents to let their children decide whether or not to play Travel Soccer.

How far do I have to travel to play league games?
Half of the games are home, and the rest will mostly be in the Westchester area, few require more than a 30 to 45 minutes drive.

When do I play?
All games are on Sunday, starting time will be determinate by the WYSL scheduler, game could start as early as 9 am for older teams to 5 pm for younger age group.

What about team tryouts?
Tryouts are held to select players for the new teams formed each year in October during the recreation season. Existing teams may hold tryouts each year in June or October to fill vacancies and allow new players to compete for positions on the team.

How much playing time will my child get?
That is always a tough question. The U-9, U-10, are development programs, no standing are kept, nor trophies awarded to these teams. We try to even out playing time as much as possible so that all players get game experience and develop a love of the sport. However, there will be situations where better players are kept on the field, until the outcome of the game is no longer in doubt.

What is U-9 and U-10 mean?
U-9 stands for under 9, in recreation soccer your child plays with kids from the same grade. Ages are defined as being younger than an age by a specific date (e.g., for the 2005-06 year, U9s must be born between 8/1/96 and 7/31/97). This is a New York State League rule.

How much does it cost?
Travel teams are parent supported. Average fee per player is $240 per year which may vary from team to team according to they needs i.e. tournament, indoor league, trainers
Etc.

What do I need to register for Travel Soccer?
You need a completed registration form, a1x1 inch recent picture of your child, a photocopy of the birth certificate, signed label and the registration fee.

If I don't make the team why should I play rec.?
If you enjoy playing soccer there is no reason to quit even if you don't make the team.
You can improve and tryout at a later date.

When are practices held?
Practice schedules are set by the coaches. The club allows the coaches the flexibility to choose practices days and times that work for both the coaches and the players.
