Should I insist my child to play Travel Soccer? NO. Travel soccer is best suited for aggressive minded children who thrive on competition. We encourage parents to let their children decide whether or not to play Travel soccer. How far do I have to travel to play league games? Half of the games are home, and the rest will mostly be in the Westchester area, few require more than a 30 to 45 minutes drive.
When do I play? All games are on Sunday, starting time is determined by the WYSL scheduler, game could start as early as 9 am for older teams and 12pm for younger age groups. The latest game typically starts at 5pm.
What about team tryouts? Tryouts are held for the new teams in the fall and spring. Spring tryouts are for playing in the following fall and spring. Fall tryouts are for playing in the following spring. Existing teams may hold individual tryouts each year or scout the new team tryouts. The existing team tryouts help fill vacancies and allow new players to compete for positions on the team. How long is the season? The season starts in the fall and runs thru spring. The fall season starts the 1st week after Labor day and ends late November. The spring season starts the 1st week after Easter and ends late June. Winter break is between the end of fall season and beginning of spring season. If you tryout in the spring and are invited to play for a MJSL travel team, you are committed to the team for the following fall & spring. You can not switch teams or clubs; and your coach may not remove you from the team. Exceptions do exist with the approval of the Board. If you tryout in the fall for spring play, the committement is only for the spring season. How much playing time will my child get? That is always a tough question. The U-8, U-9, U-10, are development programs, no standing are kept, nor trophies awarded to these teams. We try to even out playing time as much as possible so that all players get game experience and develop a love of the sport. However, there will be situations where better players are kept on the field, until the outcome of the game is no longer in doubt.
What is U-8, U-9 and U-10 mean? U-8 stands for under 8, in recreation soccer your child plays with kids from the same grade. Ages are defined as being younger than an age by a specific date (e.g., for the 2010-11 season, U-8s must be born between 8/1/02 and 7/31/03). Currently the U-8 teams play in the lower U-9 divisions.
How much does it cost? Travel teams are parent supported. The minimum fee per player is $270 per year which may increase according to each teams needs i.e. tournament, indoor league, trainers, etc...
What do I need to register for Travel Soccer? You need a completed registration form which can be found under "Forms". If you are invited to play travel, MJSL needs a 1x1 inch recent picture of your child, a photocopy of the birth certificate, signed label and the registration fee.
If I don't make the team why should I play rec.? If you enjoy playing soccer there is no reason to quit even if you don't make the team. You can improve and tryout at a later date.
When are practices held? Practice schedules are set by the coaches. The club allows the coaches the flexibility to choose practice days and times that work for both the coaches and the players.
